This is a very typical email
that we receive after almost every sale!
Dear Jim & Chris,
I just received both
CD's today. They're great. Great music, friendly service,
and quick delivery. You deserve a big positive feedback.
Thanks
Again,
George Milukas--Studemathman
Recording the albums!
We recorded the albums Studebakin' and Studebaker Rebel at the Max Stout Studio in beautiful downtown Skidmore, Missouri. We arrived in our 1963 Studebaker Champ 3/4 ton pickup truck.
Jim Calhoun
Scratch track rhythm and vocals were done first.
It is easy to be swamped when recording 20
songs in three days. Every phase had to go smoothly to reach the goal of
20 songs, performed and recorded well. The atmosphere was relaxed, which
permitted the creative process to move right along.
Chris Calhoun
Candid shot while doing bass tracks.
Chris was surprised to see a camera in her
face at the end of putting on the first bass track. She was able to get
good tracks most of the material in just one take! The bass she is playing
delivers a warm, woody, almost upright bass sound. It really records well.
Working hard laying down lead guitar tracks
To get the authentic "vintage" sound that this project needed, the Calhouns used only vintage instruments. The guitar Jim is playing is a 1965 Harmony Silhouette. The newest guitar used was a 1972 H22 Harmony bass, the oldest was a 1959 Harmony Monterey. Although a modern Roland JV1000 was used for several keyboard parts, when possible, a nice Hammond C3 Organ was used. The organ once belonged to Earl Lee Hooker, John Lee Hooker's cousin.
Mark Reinig
Max Stout Studio Manager and Engineer
Mark has a fine studio outfitted with GREAT
equipment, and he is a top notch technician, but his biggest assets are
his fantastic musical ear and unmatched patience! If you are looking for
someone to record with, Mark is your man!

Dave Small
Recording Artist and Entertainer
Dave provided harmony vocals and a wonderful insight to several songs. Dave has a recent release on Max Stout Records called "One World". It is an outstanding album. Click here to order a copy!
This 1964 Harmony Broadway was used as a lead guitar for two cuts and as a rhythm guitar is several others.
Sometimes our flash malfunctioned, but Chris still struck a pretty pose!
Jim gets serious with a riff!
Chris recorded all of the keyboard tracks.
She used both a Roland JV1000 and a Hammond C3 Organ
Giving a song some bluegrass flavor with the mandolin.
Mandolin was used as a lead instrument on one song and as a rhythm instrument on another. It just "felt right".
Recording the only fiddle part on the project, in the song "What Kind of Picker Are You".
