Adriance, Platt & Co.
Harvesting Machinery
Poughkeepsie, NY

The Adriance, Platt & Co. was formed in the middle of the 19th century. They were very prolific and made a large variety of horse drawn farm implements.

"In 1913 Adriance, Platt and Company was purchased by the Moline Plow Company of Illinois. By this time the Poughkeepsie factory had between 1,200 and 1,300 employees and appeared to be the most thriving industry in the city. But Moline Plow had overextended itself; the company staggered when the new Soviet revolutionary government refused to pay what the old Imperial government owed Moline for plows. In 1923 production was halted at Poughkeepsie. Courtesy of the Adriance Memorial Library Local History Collection." (Dutchess County: A Pictorial History. John Jeanneney and Mary L. Jeanneney. 1983.)

Pictured avove is one of the 2 horse models marketed by Adriance.
These were very sturdy and were built to last a long time.
While modern farm machiney makes the antique machinery look extremely
obsolete and almost non workable, one must consider what these machines replaced.

One horse mower could do the work of several men with hand
sickles, saving both time and money. They represented as large of improvement as
the modern haybine is an improvement over the horse mower.

Binders were to the farming industry as the assembly line was to the industrial revolution.
Before the binder harvesting was desparately hard.
The Colt 45 may have won the west, but the binder won the world.

When one looks at a grain binder,
they cannot help but marvel at the extremely complex engineering.

The Adriance, Platt & Co. factory

The Minneapolis Moline Power Implement Company was formed in 1929 by the merger of Moline Implement Company, Minneapolis Threshing Machine Company, and Minneapolis Steel & Machinery Company.

White Motor Company purchased Minneapolis Moline in 1963. AGCO purchased White Tractors in 1991.

So, in a very "stretched" way, a small part of the Adriance legacy lives on.

Adriance, Platt & Co. made and marketed Buckeye harvesting machinery.

I have visited with several people who have Adriance or Buckeye machinery, but little is commonly known about this grand old company. Between all of us, we came up with almost nothing.

I own a No. 8 hay mower and a 10 foot Adriance dump rake.
My mower is missing a wheel, if you have one for sale please contact me!

The wheel I need
